The '''Rough Riders''' were a predominantly Jewish-American Lower East Side gang led by Nathan “Kid Dropper” Kaplan. The group specialized in '''labor slugging''': selling intimidation, assault and armed protection to competing unions, employers and contractors during New York labor disputes.

“Kid Dropper's Rough Riders” is a conventional retrospective name. Contemporary newspapers more often called the organization the “Kid Dropper gang” or simply identified Kaplan as an East Side gang leader. The title does not imply any connection with Theodore Roosevelt's military regiment.

==Origins and identity==
Kaplan was born on the Lower East Side in 1891 and appears in records under Nathan Caplin and Kaplan. Later histories associate his early career with Paul Kelly's [[Five Points Gang]], but personal membership or neighborhood continuity does not make the Rough Riders a formal Five Points successor.<ref name="Tablet">Jenna Weissman Joselit, [https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/community/articles/brief-reign-kid-dropper-lower-east-side-gang-leader “The Brief Reign of ‘Kid Dropper,’ the Lower East Side Gang Leader”], ''Tablet'', adapted from ''Our Gang: Jewish Crime and the New York Jewish Community, 1900–1940''.</ref>

The gang was predominantly Jewish-American, but that description is not evidence about Jewish workers, unions or communities generally. Person-specific evidence is required for membership.

==Labor slugging==
Labor sluggers were paid to assault strikebreakers, intimidate workers, guard meetings, break strikes or attack rival contractors. The same gang could work for labor or management at different times. A 1923 international newspaper report described East Side unions and employers hiring rival gunmen and quoted police captain Cornelius Willemse on the prices charged for assaults and killings.<ref>[https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/WSTAR19231204.2.23 “New York Gangsters”], ''Western Star'', December 4, 1923.</ref>

This activity should be distinguished from ordinary trade unionism. A union's use of gangsters in a particular dispute does not turn the union or its membership into a criminal organization.

==Johnny Spanish partnership and rivalry==
Kaplan and Johnny Spanish emerged from the same Lower East Side gang environment. After their release from prison around 1917, they cooperated in labor slugging, but their partnership deteriorated into competition.

Spanish was killed on July 29, 1919. Later narratives commonly blame Kaplan or his faction, but no murder conviction established Kaplan's responsibility. John Jay College's archival catalog preserves the earlier 1911 prosecution and contemporary reporting that police regarded Spanish as a successor to Monk Eastman and connected him with violence involving Kaplan.<ref>[https://dc.lib.jjay.cuny.edu/index.php/Detail/Object/Show/object_id/5152 ''People of the State of New York v. John Wheeler and John Spanish''], Lloyd Sealy Library Digital Collections, John Jay College of Criminal Justice.</ref>

Spanish's death left Kaplan with greatly increased influence in labor slugging. That result does not prove one formal merger of the two gangs.

==War with the Little Augies==
By 1923 Kaplan faced competition from Jacob “Little Augie” Orgen and his associates. The conflict concerned control of paid labor violence and Lower East Side rackets. Later accounts identify Louis “Lepke” Buchalter, Jacob “Gurrah” Shapiro and Jack “Legs” Diamond with Orgen's side, but their later prominence should not be projected backward into a fixed 1923 hierarchy without specific evidence.

The names “Rough Riders” and “Little Augies” describe rival gangs or factions, not legal corporations. The frequently repeated label “Labor Slugger Wars” is a later organizing term for several distinct waves of conflict.

==Kaplan's killing and decline==
Police arrested Kaplan for carrying a concealed weapon on August 28, 1923. While detectives escorted him from Essex Market Court toward a taxi, a gunman shot him dead and wounded the driver. ''The New York Times'' called Kaplan a notorious East Side gang leader and gunman.<ref name="NYTKilling">[https://www.nytimes.com/1923/08/29/archives/gang-leader-slain-at-court-house-door-as-police-guard-him-gunman.html “Gang Leader Slain at Court House Door as Police Guard Him”], ''The New York Times'', August 29, 1923.</ref>

Louis Cohen, also identified as Louis Kerzner, was arrested at the scene. A grand jury indicted him for first-degree murder two days later.<ref>[https://www.nytimes.com/1923/08/31/archives/-dropper-is-buried-his-slayer-indicted-heavy-guard-of-police-keeps-.html “‘Dropper’ Is Buried; His Slayer Indicted”], ''The New York Times'', August 31, 1923.</ref> Cohen's connection with Orgen's side supports the factional-war context, but later claims that Buchalter, Shapiro or Diamond ordered the shooting require attribution rather than treatment as adjudicated fact.

Kaplan's death broke the Rough Riders' position. Surviving personnel dispersed, and the Little Augies became dominant in labor racketeering. This was displacement and recruitment of individuals, not a documented merger of two intact organizations.

==Organizational limits==
The article does not assign a complete membership list because newspaper shorthand often attached Kaplan's name to gunmen involved in separate incidents. “Rough Riders” should be understood as the best-known label for Kaplan's core gang, not every criminal who worked for him or every labor slugger in New York.
