The '''Rizzuto crime family''' is a Montreal-based Italian-Canadian organized-crime family or network that rose from the Sicilian faction of the city's Mafia. Its historical relationship to New York's [[Bonanno crime family]] is disputed: United States classifications often treated Montreal as a Bonanno faction or ''decina'', while Canadian authorities and later U.S. prosecutions have used “Rizzuto organized crime family” as a distinct operational label.

The organization should therefore be described as a former Bonanno-connected faction that developed de facto independence—not as the product of one documented secession meeting on a known date.

==Montreal and Bonanno antecedents==
Montreal's Italian underworld included a Calabrian-centered organization associated with the Cotroni family and a growing Sicilian faction. The New York Bonanno family maintained a Montreal crew or ''decina'' and personal relationships with figures on both sides.

Nicolo Rizzuto immigrated from Sicily and developed a faction within this environment. His family came from Cattolica Eraclea in Agrigento province, not Castellammare del Golfo. The Rizzutos' inclusion in this collection comes through institutional ties to the Castellammaresi-derived Bonanno family, not through shared Castellammarese birthplace.

Tension between Sicilian and Calabrian factions produced a violent power shift during the 1970s. The Rizzuto side became dominant, but the transition did not erase every Cotroni-linked network or establish that all Montreal Italian organized crime belonged to one family.

==Vito Rizzuto and New York ties==
Vito Rizzuto maintained close relationships with Bonanno figures including Gerlando Sciascia and Joseph Massino. A 1981 United States federal surveillance photograph shows the three together in New York. Association in the photograph is significant but does not alone prove every rank or jurisdictional claim.

Rizzuto participated in the May 1981 killings of Bonanno captains Alphonse Indelicato, Philip Giaccone and Dominick Trinchera. The conviction demonstrates a strong Bonanno organizational relationship. It does not settle whether Montreal remained formally subordinate during every later year.

==Growth and de facto independence==
Under Vito Rizzuto, the Montreal organization became a powerful coalition linking Sicilian Mafia figures, local Italian-Canadian networks and non-Italian partners. Its operations included drug importation, money laundering, illegal gambling, extortion and influence in construction and contracting.

The family operated through alliances rather than exercising simple command over every organized-crime group in Quebec. Cooperation with motorcycle gangs, Irish-Canadian organizations, Colombian and Mexican traffickers or Sicilian groups did not make those organizations subsidiaries.

United States prosecutors later distinguished the Rizzuto and Bonanno families in the same cases. A case involving Canadian trafficker Jimmy Cournoyer described a Montreal-based drug organization affiliated with the “Rizutto and Bonanno crime families,” the Hells Angels and the Sinaloa Cartel.<ref name="Cournoyer">[https://www.justice.gov/usao-edny/pr/canadian-drug-kingpin-ties-rizutto-and-bonanno-crime-families-hells-angels-and-mexican “Canadian Drug Kingpin with Ties to the Rizzuto and Bonanno Crime Families Sentenced”], United States Attorney's Office, Eastern District of New York.</ref> The federal release misspells the name “Rizutto”; the article uses the correct spelling “Rizzuto.”

That separate naming supports operational distinction by the 2010s. It does not prove a formal Commission-approved declaration of independence.

==Federal cases and internal conflict==
A later prosecution described Alessandro Taloni as an alleged associate of the Montreal-based Rizzuto organized crime family. Vito Rizzuto's imprisonment destabilized Montreal's underworld. His father Nicolo, son Nick Jr., brother-in-law Paolo Renda and other senior figures were killed, disappeared or prosecuted. Vito returned to Canada in 2012 and reasserted influence before dying in December 2013.

Conflict continued after his death.
