The '''K&A Gang''', also known as the '''Northeast Philly Irish Mob''', was a predominantly [[Irish-American]] criminal network based in [[Philadelphia]], [[Pennsylvania]]. The network emerged after [[World War II]] and was associated with Philadelphia's Irish-American criminal underworld during much of the late 20th century.

The group initially operated primarily as a [[burglary]] ring before expanding into [[loan sharking]], [[illegal gambling]], [[racketeering]], and [[drug trafficking]]. The name “K&A” refers to the Kensington and Allegheny intersection where the group originally formed.

==History==

===Beginnings as a burglary ring===

From the 1950s through the 1970s, members of the network were associated with burglaries and theft operations along the [[East Coast of the United States]]. Although much of the activity centered on the Philadelphia area, members also operated outside the city.

The organization was described as a loose coalition of crews rather than a centrally controlled hierarchy. Several prominent crew chiefs held influence over independent groups, giving the network a largely horizontal structure.

===Expansion into the methamphetamine trade===

By the late 1970s, improved [[burglar alarm]] technology made residential burglary more difficult and less profitable. During the 1980s, parts of the network shifted toward traditional rackets and the [[methamphetamine]] trade.

The group became associated with drug-trafficking organizations and figures in the Philadelphia region. Several members and associates were prosecuted in connection with methamphetamine manufacturing and distribution during the 1980s and early 1990s.

===Drug-ring arrests===

During the late 1980s, federal investigations targeted several alleged K&A-affiliated drug operations. Multiple members and associates were indicted on charges involving the manufacture and distribution of methamphetamine and related criminal activity.

Some individuals associated with these operations received lengthy prison sentences under federal continuing-criminal-enterprise laws.

===Roofers' Union corruption===

In the early 2000s, individuals connected to the network through the Roofers' Union, Local 30, were implicated in criminal investigations involving alleged drug trafficking, corruption, and murder. These cases contributed to the decline of the network's influence.
