==1937 attack and disbandment==
On February 22, 1937, a gunman entered the D'Amico macaroni factory and opened fire. Contemporary reporting said Gaspare D'Amico and relatives were packing macaroni when the attack occurred; D'Amico was seriously wounded, and his father was killed.<ref name="NYT1937">[https://www.nytimes.com/1937/02/23/archives/boxer-is-shot-dead-in-newark-tavern-john-licari-25-slain-by-lone.html “Boxer Is Shot Dead in Newark Tavern”], ''The New York Times'', February 23, 1937.</ref>

Later accounts commonly attribute the attack to a Profaci-linked New Jersey faction. No conviction established Profaci as the person who ordered it, so the claim remains attributed and is not used to make the Newark family subordinate to Profaci.

D'Amico left the United States after the attack. Critchley states that the Newark family disbanded around 1937 after D'Amico was wounded and his father killed.<ref name="Critchley" /> Members and territory were then absorbed or divided among several New York and New Jersey organizations.

This was dispersal, not a one-step renaming as the DeCavalcante family. The later North Jersey family developed through separate Elizabeth-based and other local organizations, even though some former Newark personnel may have entered those networks.
