==Lucchese succession==
Sources commonly date Gagliano's death to February 16, 1951, based partly on Lucchese's statement during Senate organized-crime hearings. Some later accounts have disputed the exact death chronology, so the date is retained with attribution rather than presented as independently reconstructed from a public death certificate.

Lucchese succeeded to leadership of the existing family. The organization thereafter became conventionally known as the [[Lucchese crime family]]. This was a leadership succession, not a merger or new charter.

The Gagliano phase is important because it preserves the separate Corleonesi-derived branch of the early New York Mafia. The [[Morello crime family]] did not feed only into the Masseria–Luciano–Genovese lineage; the Reina–Gagliano–Lucchese branch developed independently.
