FBI agent Joseph Pistone infiltrated the family from 1976 to 1981 under the alias Donnie Brasco. Later prosecutions established the family's hierarchy and racketeering activity through convictions and guilty pleas. A 2022 federal case described the Bonanno family as an ongoing enterprise whose leaders, members and associates functioned as an organization.
