==Labor slugging== Labor sluggers were paid to assault strikebreakers, intimidate workers, guard meetings, break strikes or attack rival contractors. The same gang could work for labor or management at different times. A 1923 international newspaper report described East Side unions and employers hiring rival gunmen and quoted police captain Cornelius Willemse on the prices charged for assaults and killings.<ref>[https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/WSTAR19231204.2.23 “New York Gangsters”], ''Western Star'', December 4, 1923.</ref> This activity should be distinguished from ordinary trade unionism. A union's use of gangsters in a particular dispute does not turn the union or its membership into a criminal organization.
