==Rosenthal murder== Herman Rosenthal operated a gambling house and publicly accused New York Police Department lieutenant Charles Becker of holding a financial interest in it. Rosenthal was shot outside the Hotel Metropole near Times Square on July 16, 1912. The New York Court of Appeals identified four men concerned in the fatal shooting: * Jacob Seidenshner, called “Whitey Lewis”; * Frank Cirofici, called “Dago Frank”; * Louis Rosenberg, called “Lefty Louie”; * Harry Horowitz, called “Gyp the Blood.”<ref name="Becker">[https://law.justia.com/cases/new-york/court-of-appeals/1915/215-ny-126.html ''People v. Becker'', 215 N.Y. 126, 109 N.E. 127] (N.Y. 1915).</ref> The four were hired through gamblers Jack Rose, Bridgie Webber and Harry Vallon. Rose, Webber and Vallon became cooperating witnesses. Their role in arranging the killing does not by itself establish that they were Lenox Avenue Gang members.<ref name="Becker" /> William Shapiro drove the automobile used in the plot and testified for the prosecution. His participation as a driver and witness likewise should not be converted automatically into permanent gang membership.
