==Name and origins== Herbert Asbury wrote that Orgen, formerly associated with Dopey Benny Fein's labor-slugging circle, organized a small group “which he called the Little Augies.”<ref name="Asbury">Herbert Asbury, [https://archive.org/details/the-gangs-of-new-york-herbert-asbury ''The Gangs of New York''] (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1928), labor-slugging chapters.</ref> “Little Augies” is therefore stronger than a purely retrospective surname label, although no charter or fixed membership roll survives. Later accounts sometimes place the gang's origin around 1911. The strongest reviewed evidence securely reconstructs its principal independent phase from 1923; an exact founding year should not be inferred from Orgen's earliest criminal activity. The nickname “Augie” was reportedly a corruption of Orgen's surname rather than his given name.<ref>[https://www.nytimes.com/1927/10/17/archives/bury-little-augie-today-under-guard-police-to-watch-funeral-of-the.html “Bury ‘Little Augie’ Today under Guard”], ''The New York Times'', October 17, 1927.</ref>
