Detroit's early Mafia environment contained several distinct organizations and territorial factions. Historical reconstructions identify East Side and Grosse Pointe groups, West Side and Dearborn factions, a Hamtramck organization and River or downriver groups around Wyandotte and Ford City.<ref name="DetroitHistory">[https://mafiahistory.us/maf-b-de.html “Detroit Crime Family Bosses”], ''The American Mafia'', historical succession and source overview.</ref>

These factions cooperated, competed and fought. They did not constitute one family from the moment the first Sicilian migrants arrived. A common Detroit location or Sicilian origin did not establish membership in a unified organization.

Salvatore Catalanotte became an important mediator among factions during Prohibition. His death in 1930 removed a stabilizing figure and intensified competition between East Side leaders and Cesare “Chester” LaMare's West Side or downtown faction.
